Does the filter only work when my air system is running?

Air must pass through any filter for it to work, and the air in your HVAC system is pulled through the filter by the fan in your air system. If you fan is not running, it is like having a massive air purifier sitting unused in the corner.

We had great test results with the fan running intermittently. For best results, you would set your fan to run continuously or install a programmable thermostat that circulates air in your home automatically forĀ optimal home comfort and air filtration, such as the LUX CAG1500 ($49.99 at Amazon.com).

Also, keep in mind that gas concentrations are highest when you seal yourself in your home during the winter or summer months. This is also when you system is going to run the most, so air will be filtered regularly.

There are new, easy to install thermostats that run your fan every hour to maintain good airflow and filtration, whether your cooling or heating system is running or not. This is a great solution to not only filtration but home comfort. A good example of this is the LUX CAG1500 programmable thermostat available at Amazon.com for only $49.99.

The best, but more expensive option is running your fan continuously. If you run your fan continuously, your air conditioning or furnace should remain set to operate automatically with the thermostat.

Also, keep in mind that gas concentrations are highest when you seal yourself in your home during the winter or summer months. This is also when you system is going to run the most, so air will be filtered regularly. During the spring and fall, your system may not run as often, but you are more likely to open the windows or doors, reducing VOC and formaldehyde concentrations.
